When the Chinese Nationalists began to seriously challenge Japan's position in Manchuria in 1931, the Kwantung Army (Japanese armed forces in Manchuria) occupied Manchuria. In the following year, "Manchukuo" was declared an independent state, controlled by the Kwantung Army through a puppet government. In the same year, the Japanese air force bombarded Shanghai in order to protect Japanese residents from anti Japanese movements.

In 1933, Japan withdrew from the League of Nations since she was heavily criticized for her actions in China.

In July 1937, the second Sino-Japanese War broke out. A small incident was soon made into a full scale war by the Kwantung army which acted rather independently from a more moderate government. The Japanese forces succeeded in occupying almost the whole coast of China and committed severe war atrocities on the Chinese population, especially during the fall of the capital Nanking. However, the Chinese government never surrendered completely, and the war continued on a lower scale until 1945.

In 1940, Japan occupied French Indochina (Vietnam) upon agreement with the French Vichy government, and joined the Axis powers Germany and Italy.

Your right Stephen, pearl Harbor was just like the Israeli bombing of Gaza except for the fact that we did not start shooting rockets at japan on Dec, 3rd 1941

As far as the japs being conciliatory and only wanting peace, All I can say to that is Bull Shit . the above dates should tell you all you need to know.

I agree, Tom. Olbermann may be the closest thing to a left-wing hero on cable news (personally I just find him annoying), but his corporate bosses will let him go just so far. He can opine, but telling the American people the truth about what is actually happening, to them and in the world, on a higher level is expressly forbidden. That's why he has to stick to a "Joe the Plumber" story or a "Sarah Palin's Family" story when any real progressive journalist would consider these items beneath their notice. He's useless.

I cannot add a thing to your quite comprehensive and excellent piece Mr Lendman.
In your opinion what explains the israeli hold over the Western Establishment Media? Those media invariably defend or at best ignore israeli (mis)behaviour, particularly their treatment of Palestinians as little more than livestock and most notably israeli commission of mass murder and the absurd excuses trotted out to justify it. What product or resource or singular knowledge and talent does israel manufacture or possess that is so invaluable? Why mustn't the Western Establishment Media irritate the israelis? .What are they afraid of?

As an aside, for all the Keith Olbermann fans, yeah, Keith is real tough on soft targets like W. Bush but he's very very quiet on issues that are not flattering to israel.
