I think the real myth is the one that says we have a democracy which we clearly don't know have ever. So, nothing to lament, but something to move toward - movement. Democracies are a rare - and isolated enterprise. I don't know if a nation-state can have a democracy, even during the early democracy of Greece - City-states were not able to really embrace totally democratic principles. Scale is important. I think what Johnson and Vidal lament is the promise - through the Declaration of Indenpence - a truly revolutionary document along with the Bill of Rights - of a living democracy. This is one that exists daily, not every 2 year election cycles. I contend it can only work when scaled to localities.
