As a follower of events in Venezuela and one who is hopeful of a bottom-up rule of the people, I much prefer first hand, objective reports like this about actually existing conditions than some other authors who offer more indiscriminately favorable reports.

I made a two week visit to Venezuela in December 2005, and left there with the uneasy feeling that this revolution might very well stall in the rule of self-seeking bureaucrats. The culture of crime that infects all levels of society, the worst is at the top, is the biggest impediment to socialist progress. There seems to have been little progress made to weaken it. I'm still hoping for the best. Thanks for the report.
