The main press here in Chavez' neighboring Colombia has painted the same picture as ABC et al; that Chavez and the PSUV are experiencing an erosion of power despite winning 17/22 states. Their focus of the opposition winning a few of the more populous and wealthy states concurs with DavidG's observation of the elitist golden goose.

Chavez' opposition base overwhelmingly consists of the wealthy elite who have been extremely spiteful of the state's social programs and the overturning of their oligarchic stranglehold, and who after a decade continue to stubbornly resist any sort of humane distribution to the majority of impoverished people who are slowly climbing out of poverty thanks to Chavez. A champion for the poor is not going to have the support of those people who for 40 years under the Punto Fijo Pact dominated Venezuelan society and selfishly distributed amongst their kind the state's abundant petro earnings.

The arrogant greed of Venezuela's elite will continue to establish opposition against Chavez until one of theirs can again reign supreme and overturn the social progress of the past decade. But that minority will never attain the momentum it seeks, nor the majority support of the populace who for once is finally receiving free health care, education and land reform under Chavez' Bolivarian Revolutionary Movement. Chavez has reestablished dignity amongst the masses.

The wealthy had their turn, now is still the age of redemption.

¡Que vivan los pueblos libres y soberanos!

Best to all.

The ABC no longer leans to the left, Hue. I no longer trust its reporting. SBS has similar problems.

Staying informed is becoming more difficult all the time!

Cheers.

David, did you listen to the ABC last night? They made it sound like Chavez was dealt a crushing defeat across the board and painted it like he was being a stubborn would be dictator for not conceding defeat to his opponents. I wonder what would happen if Pilger offered his services for free to Australian public radio

Chavez shows what smart socialism can achieve. By contrast, the current world economic and financial crisis and global warming shows what capitalism achieves. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to work out which is superior.

And you don't have to be a genius to work out why rich capitalists hate Chavez because his system is undermining their elitist 'golden goose'.
