Timber,

I, too, am resident in North Carolina. It is too bad you were suckered into voting for Obama. The official write-in candidates in North Carolina are Ralph Nader (independent reform capitalist candidate), Cynthia McKinney (Green Party), and Brian Moore (Socialist Party USA). I am writing in Brian Moore who is the only true anti-capitalist candidate running in North Carolina.

timber,
yes, nato presence in afgh'n is a crime. it is a universal right to resist one's occupation.
in fact, pals, afghanis r legally and morally obligated to resist their respective occupations.
however, i still wld not call occupation/hunting children/ women a war.
i do not mean to bring u up, timber, but comparing an event in afgh'n w. the possible event in US that u describe cannot be valid.
the event u describe is not happening, and has near zero chance of happening even in decades or centuries.
look, u can't beat up an infant and call it a fight. u can't kill mostly civ's and from safety of the sky and call it a war.
gangs have no pangs. mafiosos have killed mafiosos. they have learned that from other gangs but mostly from washington gang.
gang and mob behave similarly or same.
so, to me, it's just a gang w.o. any pang that is killing people.
now,WW2 was a war.
US, or its forces, were also attacked from the sky and deeps.
pashtuns have no jets, missiles, tanks, subs, artillery; so how can they be at war?
the best i can come up with wld be to call it manhunt/slaughter.thnx

Margaret,

Yes and oh no. You write the truth as I also see it but it hurts so. I knew it back in the 60s when I was in Mississippi, Freedom Summer, and the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party was an element of our struggle for freedom. Yeah, and so what, if we get some of US into the Democratic Party Establishement? Aren't we then a part of the Establishemnt, black or white, men or women? And that is what has happened with Obama. So, that doesn't change the structure, doesn't address the cause of the problems--capitalism. No. But there is one change, and that has its own roots in dignity and struggle. He is a man of dark skin and he can be president because many millions of us blacks and whites fought so long, so hard, so determined as we did.

Bozhidar Bob--

If the same skirmishes were taking place in Maryland or Oregon instead of some place that Americans can't find on a map, is there any question that we would call it a war?

Personally, I call what the American military and its mercenary counterparts are doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan "terrorism."

I'm unaffiliated with any political party, I live in North Carolina, and I'm ashamed to say that I just voted for Obama, mostly because Nader/Gonzales were not on the ballot, nor was there any chance in hell that they would have been.

I've been deeply depressed to see just how quick progressives have been to support Obama based almost exclusively because he repeats jingoistic fables about America that make them feel good and because he has the potential to be America's first black president. By that criteria, the election of Clarence Thomas or Condoleeza Rice would have done just as well. Democrats have been too quick to believe the hysterical lies about Obama told by Republicans. Or maybe not, maybe this is an expression of the true nature of the Democratic Party in 2008, and any idea of them as a vehicle for progressive ideas died with that other Democratic icon, Bill Clinton.

Have you actually been to 'Afgh'n'? I've actually been to Iraq and no body indiscriminately bombs civilians for no reason. Even suicide bombers have some justification for accidentally killing bystanders. Even if China invaded the US tomorrow I would hardly even claim they were murdering our women and children just because.

it seems to me there is no war going on in afgh'n; just some skirmishes in pashtun areas.
and there is the usual bombings, missiles that kill civ's; children mostly.
actually canada and US call their venture a "mission", "winning hearts and minds", "building democracy", etc.
but by any name, crime is going on. thnx

While I'm a secret Obama fan myself, but I fail to see how Obama will NOT continue the 'racist imperialist' war you speak of since 1) he plans to increase the size of the military by at 65,000 troops, and 2) he wants to move troops out of Iraq and plant his own 'surge' in Afghanistan. Furthermore, he's already spoke of actions against a nuclear Iran, but unlike McCain he wants to negotiate before blowing them up.
