The Dominate species

100,000 years ago The first anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens) appear in Africa some time before this, they evolved from Homo heidelbergensis. At present estimate, humans have approximately 20,000–25,000 genes and share 99% of their DNA with the now extinct Neanderthal and 95% of their DNA with their closest living evolutionary relative, the chimpanzees.

Homo sapiens skin is relatively hairless in comparison to other primates. The skin colour of contemporary humans can range from very dark brown to very pale pink. It is geographically stratified and in general correlates with the environmental level of UV. Human skin and hair colour is controlled in part by the MC1R gene. For example, the red hair and pale skin of some Europeans is the result of mutations in MC1R. Human skin has a capacity to darken (sun tanning) in response to UV exposure. Variation in the ability to sun tan is also controlled in part by MC1R.

27,000 years ago Neanderthals die out, leaving Homo sapiens as the only living species of the genus Homo.

14,000 years ago The term Anthropocene has been used to describe the period of time during which Man has had a major impact on the planet and its inhabitants. Sadly, its beginning is marked by the megafaunal extinction in the Americas which signify the onset of the Holocene extinction event. Fierce debate rages about the influence of man in the initiation of this extinction, but no-one can deny that humanity is contributing to its propagation.

Present Day With a human population approaching 6.6 billion, the impact of humanity is felt in all corners of the globe. Overfishing, anthropogenic climate change, industrialisation, intensive agriculture, clearance of rain forests and other activities contribute to a dramatically rising extinction rate. At current rates, humanity will have eradicated one-half of life's biodiveristy over the next hundred years or sooner.

When we finally come to the finish line we will be in a different world. At this stage of the game it doesn't matter what we do. Years of living on a credit card have come to an end. What's amazing to me is how quickly our world has deleveraged. The only thing we can do now is pray and pray hard.

Trying to maintain America’s dominant place in the global system. This of course Mike is where I hear the laughter of the Gods. Silly humans trying to be dominant on the Earth and in only a few years the Earth will have a little to show us dominant humans. There is still time but trying to be dominant is probably the wrong approach.
