"I suppose in the way in which they were contrasted with religiosity. There is a puritan streak running in American society, while at the same time sexuality is used as a tool in advertising to push goods at us. Contradictions abound."

That's not a contradiction. Puritans are obsessed with sex - that's why pornography is so popular among Americans. Puritans are also obsessed with food - hence the popularity of dieting among Americans. Both sex and eating are consumptive activities - sensual. The Puritan project is about renouncing sensuality - but one can't renounce something unless one understands it. Obsession is a tactic to gain understanding.

It's the same relationship as Love has to Hate. Both love and hate are forms of intimacy which increase understanding of something. They are not contradictions.

Puritans are enemies of sex, but as spoken in The Godfather - "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer".
