Lots of families in North Louisiana made an effort to bring diapers, formula, clothes, food etc. to surprise guests from New Orleans who were housed in abandoned Sam's stores, local colleges and arenas. The majority of the people who were evacuated were very grateful for the ride out of New Orleans and for shelter from the storm. A few people were gripe-y. Some had warrents for their arrest.
Many of the same North Louisiana folks that provided food etc. for the evacuees of Gustav are folks who have repeatedly volunteered in clean-up and rebuilding efforts for victims of Katrina and Rita.
What else would you have us do Mr. Quigley?

on Sept. 6, Rad-Green discussion list digest vol. 60, issue 17, included:

Lessons: New Orleans Battles Mutant American Government, dated August 31, 2008, by Scott Weinstein (RN who spent nine months in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina with the Common Ground Health Clinic).

Scott Weinstein refers to Bill Quigley and his work:

New Orleans civil rights lawyer and activist Bill Quigley brilliantly decoded New Orleans’s betrayal in “How to Destroy an African-American City in Thirty-Three Steps – Lessons from Katrina”. Number One was to delay aid. The rest were to discriminate against African Americans and the poor.

(perhaps also in DV archive on New Orleans/Katrina)
