America is a society of incantations.

"...progressives should welcome the people’s technical ownership of mechanisms for growth," writes Glen. But Glen obviously does not understand that his use of that phrase, here, now, is an effort to define and thereby give substance to a much-desired but non-existent social group in America -- namely "Progressives". And this effort is blatantly, almost embarrasingly (a misspelling, no doubt), an incantation.

Why is this article not "filed" at DV under the word "Progressives"? Isn't it obvious? There IS no "Topic" at DV called "Progressives". Because there is no real-world correlate with the word, here, now, in America.

Sure, IF all the various domestic radical opponents to Bushco had got together by now, the disgusted no-voters, the principled Marxists, the lonely unionists, the anti-racists, etc, etc, -- well it would look sweet, oh so sweet, for the November elections. But alas, they haven't.

Hey, what the hey?

If the Bushies can continuously create reality by incantation, it's past time their poor, disunited opponents gave it a try.

Nice try, Glen. Would that you were as effective a witch as the Bushies.

this is all well and good, but creating The Socialistic Union of Soviet States of America ain't gonna work, at least not for long, even with the best intentions and most benevolent people in charge. Human society is just too complicated to be ruled effectively by mega-corporations, whether their mission is to serve bankers, people, or the world. Just make the playing field as even as it can reasonably get, and give commoners some access to credit. Americans don't need 700 billions bailout; the working people need to be able to borrow 700 dollars necessary to stop living in a motel and rent a decent bedroom - to pay up-front the damage deposit and first month rent. It is an illusion that you can magically change people lives throwing money at them; they just need a fighting chance, not handouts.
