NATO WILL BE GONE AS SOON AS EUROPE REALIZES THAT THE US CANNOT POLITICALLY EITHER SACRIFICE THE INNER CITIES OF THE US THROUGH A MUTUALLY ASSURED DISTRUCTION POLICY OR A MILITARY DRAFT WITH THE NEW BROWNING DEMOGRAPHICS IN THE US AFTER OBAMA ACTVATES HIS "RACIALLY BALANCED" IMMIGRTION POLICY. RUSSIA CAN TAKE EUROPE. THE SOUTH WEST US FALLS TO MEXICAN INFLUENCE, AND CHINA CAN HAVE WHATS LEFT. WE WILL NOT ONLY BE THROUGH WITH NATO BUT ALSO WHITES, CHRISTIANITY, DEMOCRACY, FREEDOM, CONSERVITIVES, AND OF COURSE LIBERALS.

CG, you have never played chess? Georgia was open territory as far as the big players were concerned. Russia has made its move. Now the countries around Georgia, like the squares on the chessboard, are possibly under Russian influence.

It’s true that Europe depends a lot on Russia for oil to keep from freezing in the winter. Georgia had a pipeline to Central Asia bypassing Russia. Now Russia can really pressure Europe into doing anything it wants. We have all seen how easily Russia turns off the taps.

And just how was NATO going to keep Russia out?
Perhaps like they are "keeping the Taliban out?"
NATO, like the US, is good at bombing from afar, cruise missiles from afar and bullshit from afar. That's about it.
The nuke threat doesn't quite work against Russia either.
NATO is European countries which depend on Russia to keep from freezing in the winter, at a minimum.
Remember Ukraine in 2006?
Gazprom has more clout than NATO.

Let’s be honest – the Cold War is not totally over. Russia, though not an ideological threat is still an economic threat. All those years as a non-consumerism based economy means that Russia still has vast, untapped resources. He who holds resources holds the world. Russia has also shown itself as cheeky as America in invading other countries to protect its interests. Why do think those eastern European countries are rushing to join NATO – if you don’t have a big bomb, at least your NATO ally American has quite a few. Hasn’t NATO been sitting around asking themselves if only Georgia had been admitted sooner, they could have kept the Ruskies out?

And let’s not forget about Turkey. They have a strong Ghangis Khan streak in them – their army still pledges allegiance to the guy. Turkey has ambitions to unite all the Turkic peoples again, just like the good old days. That would be one big country between China and Europe – with a whole lot of oil. That is really against American desires. So America has to keep them in check by keeping them in a club they can control and by dangling EU status to them – while, at the same time, they try to arm twist the Europeans into believing a country made up of Asians with half a city on the European continent qualifies to enter the EU. American couldn’t do all that without NATO.

But many thanks, Rodrigue. This is a good article in answer to your question.

the USA is using NATO to further the US Empire just as it has done to the world bank .it is doing this also with the 'war on terror', trying to reshape the middle east to be pro americian/israel. and if anyone disagrees with there policies they are labelled unpatriotic or anti semetic.it is amazing that the USA does this in the name of freedom and democracy when they have created or sponsered some of the worlds most undemocratic leaders in recent history to further the americian way of life.personly i think israel controls the USA these days

NATO = Not Available To Operate. I see NATO as a legal pretext for keeping US forces and military supplies near Israel, which, given the Lobby's stranglehold on US public life, is the only policy goal the US is allowed to pursue. There's no doubt that the ultimate aim of current US policy is the foist Israel on NATO and use European troops as cannon fodder in the dirty wars that propping up Israel engenders.

Thus, the discrediting of the US and NATO in the Georgian fiasco is a very positive development and the horror that the latter has set off among Lobby shills tends to confirm that.

Mr Tremblay is, of course, perfectly right to say that NATO should go but for the above reasons, that will not be easy. Allowing it to go dormant, while continuing to exist on paper, is probably the best that can be hoped for from President Obama!
