Part of the Spaniard problem with the likes of Hugo Chavez is his unabashed pride in his indigenous roots. The Spaniards began a sytematic policy of racial apartheid 500 years ago that continues today. If you weren't white enough (that is, sufficiently Castillian), you simply existed to benefit those who were and are white enough. We referred to this group as the 'rabbiblancos', those white, wealthy, priveleged people who took great pains to maintain their whiteness, wealth and privilege. The Spaniards have never gotten by their racist natures. If you consider the coloring of Lula and Ortega, they are very light complected. Chavez and Morales, who both get short shrift from Spain, are very brown. Just a thought for consideration, because racisim is alive and well in Latin America and had its poisonous roots in Spain.
