During WWII the FBI sought out and worked with the mobster Lucky Luciano(spelling?)( who was in prison at the time). To enlist his help in keeping the docks in New York and the rest of the east coast safe from sabotage. Why? Because President Roosevelt had bigger fish to fry! Tiger Woods has a dream, and if that means he has to associate with people and companies whom some think are evil incarnate, so be it. Leave Tiger Woods alone! He avoids politics, let him continue his work in peace.

Bob

PS  David;
"Then there’s the matter of 18 billion gallons of toxic waste the company has been accused of dumping in the Amazon."
Please check your source for that, 18 billion gallons would require over 2.5 million truck loads. Even spread over 25 years that would be 100,000 truck loads a year, about 274 every day! Have a good weekend and maybe a great round of golf.

So true, Frank. But old golfers seem never to retire. And with Jimmy Connors pumping for the Tennis Hall of Fame every day on the Tennis Channel, tennis is heading in golf's direction, rather than vice-versa.

So. (Non-team) sports fans' questions for the day: (1) What does "enigmatic" mean? (2) Who is more enigmatic, Federer or Woods?

This essay is reminscent of a speech given by Michael Edward Dyson on Barack Obama on Pacific Radio recently (during the fund drive). Dyson spoke how important it was for Barack Obama to get elected even if he did not address racial issues in a way that he could if he were an activist and not interested in public office. The argument was that if Barack Obama got elected President of the U.S. then black and minority kids could see that they, too could achieve that goal.

Yes, and if the kids were perceptive, they would see that the ONLY way Barack could achieve that goal was to sell out by "stifling himself" as the bigot Archie Bunker would have said. Tiger Woods is a great role model as a black/mixed race golfer. He was literally raised by his father to be a champion golfer. But as a minority citizen, Tiger Woods is still a great golfer. He has made hundreds of millions of dollars in his career, but he is still not ready to rock the boat for the poor and the downtrodden and the under-represented. Tiger Woods is more like Barack Obama than like Al Sharpton. He is more like O.J. than T.O.

Tiger Woods know how his bread is buttered and he likes it buttered rich and deep. Maybe when he is ready to retire he might reflect more on the racial divide and the divide between rich and poor, but he will probably be so set in his ways and comfortable with luxurious living that he will not want to rock the boat then, either.

But he is one hell of a great golfer.

I've been fantasizing about Tiger starting a union of active professional men golfers and volunteering to be its first President. But Dave's suggestion might be a less improbable fantasy -- at this point in time.
