Lloyd, that WAS my schooling in 71.
Sitting on the banks of the Charles, drinking beer and soaking up all that New England culture, especially the Commons.
71 was quite a time.

As far as Russia and China go, don't forget BRIC. Which has, if I'm not mistaken, expanded to include Iran as well.
That's 70% of the population of the world, along with 70% of its resources.
A formidable, nuclear armed group, if there ever was one.
How long before Brazil has 'the bomb?'

I drank a lot of Gansett myself, but in Providence when visiting my best friend at Brown. In the early 1960's. His name was Mac and he lived up the street from me in San Antonio, Texas, before we both went East for college. Mac liked to characterize Providence as a penal colony without fences, but that was long ago. And he married one of the best looking ladies at Pembroke and they lived happily for some time after in San Antonio, where Mac was a very successful lawyer and Reagan Republican. He died several years ago, and last time I checked, she was a practising and successful lawyer -- about whose politics I'm totally in the dark -- there.

So you spent some school days in Cambridge, Mass? In which decade and school was that?

I'm pretty cynical about disappeared news in the US. But, Bush rejoins China and Russia at the hip?

My best friend, now long deceased, went to Brown. He was a Texan too, and used to say Providence should be made into a penal colony, it just needed a long chain-link fence. This was in the early 1960's. I remember a spring weekend taking the train south to Provs, and getting SO drunk on Gansett, while my best friend's room-mate, Larry Small, with green-dyed hair, danced topless out on some beautiful green place filled with Pembrokers and countless guys. Then train-ing back up to Cambridge the next morning so hungover I thought of three new and astounding thesis topics.

But hp. This is just a reminiscence from long, long ago. Needless to say, the Chuck empties into Boston Harbor, so you were in what? I conclude the BSchool.

But why I'm here posting: I'm pretty cynical about news stories being disappeared in America, down Chomsky's "black hole" of history. But "Bush Gets China and Russia Re-Joined at the Hip?"

I spent a few days going to school on the sunny banks of the 'Chuck' myself, Lloyd.
Watching them build the John Hancock building, whilst drinking Narragansett beer.

News quips:

"It's time for the human race to enter the solar system."

"The vast majority of our imports come from outside the country."

"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment, it's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it."

"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."

"If we don't suceed we run the risk of failure."

"Well I think if you say you're going to do something and don't do it, that's trustworthiness."

"For NASA, space is still a high priority."

"Quite frankly, teachers are the only profession that teach our children."

"I just want you to know that when we're talking about war, we're really talking about peace."

"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future."

"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls."

And my personal favorite: "The problem with the French is that they don't have a word for 'entrepreneur'."

All these any more, brought to you by our illustrious commander in chief and Yale graduate, George W. Bush

I was just taking MS's insights to the next level.

But Happy Memorial Day, dear readers. I'm remembering an uncle I never met whose P-38 apparently fell apart while he was delivering it to US Forces in the Pacific, in 1944 or 1945. The family story is he told my father that he wasn't afraid when flying at nite because, strangely enough lately, when he pushed the cockpit back he could hear the angels singing.
