Every time I see one of these increasingly common reports, I think of Mikhael Gorbachev. You see, I think the currently unfolding Age of Extermination, is only possible, because of the disappearance of the USSR. While the Soviet Union was a travesty of the socialist ideals of much of the world's population, it was something of an impediment to the spread of Market Capitalism. Gorbachev foolishly expected democratisation would lead to empowerment of the Soviet people and the liberation of those productive and civilising forces that state and market capitalism have always stifled. Instead he got the bibulous stooge Yeltsin, and the parasitic 'oligarchs'. The Soviet people got a greater economic Depression than that of the '30's in the West. The world got an intensification of Market Fundamentalist 'globalisation', skyrocketing inequality and exploding poverty. As has been pointed out elsewhere, free of the constraints of Soviet influence, the US was able to intensify its economic depredations, leavened by neo-colonial expeditions in Panama, Iraq, Yugoslavia and Afghanistan. Subversion of elections has been raised to the level of science, and NATO, promised to be kept to a manageable size, has been expanded to the borders of Russia. In fact US Imperialism has entered a new, intensified phase of global hegemony and exploitation. A prominent feature has been the heightened murderousness of these policies. The perennial toll of fifty thousand preventable deaths of children, every day, has been ignored, and as if it to make plain their intentions, the US has appointed Market Fundamentalist loonies to head UNICEF, where they have proved, as expected, deliberately useless. The wars of mass murder, exemplified by the cowardly mass murder of defenseless people fleeing Kuwait at the end of the 1991 Gulf War, and the medieval barbarism of the 'sanctions of mass destruction' whose 500,000 child victims were vilely and infamously described by Madeleine Albright as a price that was "worth it", indicate we have entered a new age of mass murder. One million dead, plus, in Iraq since 2003 should ram home the point. Undoubtedly the Masters of the world intend to solve the ecological calamity unfolding by a mass cull of 'useless eaters'. Most blogs I read are filled with Rightists laying all blame for the climate change catastrophe, the one they feverishly denied for years, at the feet of the world's poor. If you point out that the hyper-consumption of the rich world is a greater problem, you are likely to be abused. The psychological terrain for indifference to mass death is being carefully cultivated. I believe scenes such as these in New Orleans are meant to make the point that the untermenschen inhabit not just the poor world. The black residents of New Orleans are being treated as human detritus. The racism is naked and unapologetic. I believe one of these demonstrations will be engineered into a massacre, at some stage, perhaps soon. The 'strategy of tension' keeping the public in a state of fearful apprehension, to the benefit of the political Right, can only be kept alive if the boogey-men are believable. Osama, particularly as he's been dead for years, is getting a little frayed around the edges. But 'the enemy within' the class and race enemy in the heart of the nation, now there's an opportunity for intensified fear and hate-mongering, and the concommitant erection of further elements of the neo-feudal fascism of the future.

Bill, this story and the news of your continuing commitment has even reached the mountains of Vermont. I watched it on the TV news and it was also in the Bennington Banner (which usually does not print the really important news). You are one of the heroes of our time !
