A Modest Proposal

“Never mind that the occupation is widely and accurately understood around the world to be a brazenly imperialist effort to deepen U.S. control of super-strategic Middle Eastern energy resources…” — Paul Street/August 15th, 2007

You know Paul, I too believed Middle East oil was an enormous part of, if not indeed the key to the Chipmunk’s 2003 aggression against Iraq. But after witnessing the steadfastness and honorability of the little rascal’s sticking to his guns about America’s interest being to see in Iraq something started like Democracy As We Know It, a modest proposal occurred to me. To show that oil is not the whole point; to show how hollow is Osama’s claim that radical Middle Eastern Muslims have concrete objections to unalterable American interests there.

But first let me say: there’s never been a truly radical solution proposed to America’s problems that doesn’t initially cause enormous loathing and fear, not only in America but around the world. And many good (and even not-so-good) people may at first react to my modest proposal as if it were just a trailer for the Chipmunk’s nuke-ing much of the Middle East.

I propose Congress pass a law mandating withdrawal of all civilian United States citizens from the Middle East, not primarily involved in the military effort in Iraq, for a period of one year; at which time they could be invited back individually by their expelled-from Middle East nation if it is a state trying to practice Democracy As We Know It.

Whatcha’ think?

“Never mind that the occupation is widely and accurately understood around the world to be a brazenly imperialist effort to deepen U.S. control of super-strategic Middle Eastern energy resources…” -- Paul Street / August 15th, 2007

Well Paul, I too believed Middle East oil was an enormous part of, if not indeed the key to the Chipmunk’s 2003 invasion of Iraq. But after witnessing the steadfastness and honorability of the little rascal’s sticking to his guns about our country’s interest being, really, to see in Iraq something started like Democracy As We Know It, and to see it blossom from there, a modest proposal occurred to me. To separate America’s putative interest in Middle East oil from the halls of debate, as it were, to observe meaningful democratic debate in action over there, without all the confused perceptions of the purity of our motives in America as well as over there. To show, simply and conclusively, that Americans are not mainly interested in countries over there out of our desire for “control of super-Strategic Middle Eastern energy resources” – as you put it so well.

But first let me warn you: there’s never been a truly radical solution proposed to America’s problems that doesn’t initially cause enormous loathing and fear, and not only among American’s but also “around the world.” Yes many good (and even not-so-good) people everywhere may at first interpret my proposed solution as a trailer for the Chipmunk’s nuke-ing the whole darn area!

I propose Congress pass a law mandating withdrawal of all civilian United States citizens from the Middle East, not primarily involved in the military effort in Iraq, for a period of one year; at which time they could be invited back individually by their expelled-from Middle East nation.

A fair characterization of the Democrats, in general, is that they would not have launched an Iraq invasion, although they supported it in Congress. However they would have maintained the same kind of embargo and air bombardment a la Clinton-1 (Albright 1997 : well worth it even at the cost of hundred of thousands of Iraqi civilians casualties).
I applaud the author for mentioning the moral responsibility of the US towards the Iraqi civilians. Not just since the invasion, but also before it And not just in Iraq, but also in Jordan and Syria where millions have been dispersed at great cost to them and their hosts.
Finally, another no show in US Hollywood-inspired media is the lack of any postmortem on the UN embargo on Iraq leading up to the invasion. To my mind, it is amply clear that there was no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq for a long time before the invasion. Yet no one asks what justified the campain to starve the Iraqi people for many years prior to the invasion.
The embargo was a precursor to the invasion (it facilitated it and then made it necessary after 911 in the eyes of many). My prediction is that a democrat president such as Clinton-2 would move towards a similar embargo against Iran with the hope that a bush-3 type of president will mete the coup de grace (assuming sustained US military and economic dominance into the next few decades - doubtful but possible).
So the answer is neither in Dem Congress nor in a Dem White House. Both parties are too corrupt by money to make real changes. The change will have to happen from the outside.

This is excellent. What I wd like to see next is for somebody to get personal & precise: exactly which quasi-"progressives" are doing what, i.e., who is at least plausibly trying to resist "America's Caligula" et al, and who is it that are carrying out these elaborate charades, all this highly creative Psuedo-Peacenikism?

It appears that some people would perhaps deserve a "mixed" report card, in that some folks may not realize that in their concern for the victims of the humanitarian crisis in western Sudan, they are playing into the hands of the bi-national Zionist Power Configuration's many-sided strategy. There are other equally subtle gambits being played, making use of well-meaning people's concern about conditions in places like Haiti to maintain the marketability of Democ-rat Party candidates who can be relied on to "hic salta" anytime AIPAC says "jump".
