Isn't it important to note that Hank Aaron himself was black? Therefore what's racist about not wanting to see one black athlete surpass the record of another black athlete? Do most of the black respondents in that ESPN/ABC poll even know that Aaron was black?

As Zirin points out the era prior to 1947 was skewed as great African American ball players were not allowed to compete. As Zirin notes, that was a great performance "enhancer". No one is challenging those stats.

I don't like Bonds. He's an a**. And, yes, he may have used peformance enhancing substances, as have many contemporary and even long ago past players. But, where's the proof? Didn't we used to believe in this country that one is "Innocent until proven guilty?" What has happned to fair play here in America? Unless he tests positive, I'm not going to single him out. As noted, the entire era's statistics are skewed.

Yes, racism plays a part in this. However, if it were, say, Kirby Puckett or Ozzie Smith heading toward 756, you can't say people would be reacting to either of them as they are to Bonds. Puckett and Smith were beloved. Bonds is a dick, pure and simple.
