Perhaps being an old guy just makes it even more depressing.
The quietness of government once sanctioned less exposure even if it meant the public had to wait to know what was going on.
The film of Kassenbach going over to George Wallace in front of the University of Alabama’s main entrance and leaning close to his ear
parroting John Kennedy’s demand to ‘remove himself or he would be subjected to the embarrassment of being removed by the National Guard, regardless of the execution it will be done, the President said’.
Governor George Wallace walked away and allowed the first Black Students to enter the University. A grainy black and white image came across the screen so we could see the reaction of the President and his brother Bobby, they both gave a great sigh of relief and hugged proud of a job well done. They were off the government payroll so everything they did was for the glory not a profit. Kennedy with all his missteps and general youthful optimism was the last time we embraced a healthy American Dream and not sold to the highest bidder.

In Australia, in Murdoch’s rags, enthusiasm for the war is unabated. Murdoch’s local ‘flagship’ (the flag is definitely the Skull and Crossbones) The Australian, a viscerally Ziocon rag where love of the US is only trumped by devotion to Israel, runs the full ‘victory is nigh’ lunacy. It is also a flagrant Holocaust Denier, losing no opportunity, in its editorials, opinion pages and amongst its menagerie of pet letter writers, to denigrate The Lancet report, and attempt to substitute the ludicrous under-counting of the ‘Iraq Body Count’. No apologies here. Just utterly florid, and worsening, agit-prop, unleavened by conscience, and the firm resolve to fight the good fight to the last drop of Iraqi blood.
