Thanks for this excellent article, which I hope will be read by many heretofore misinformed (north) Americans. As a daily reader (in Spanish) of internet versions of anti-Chavez Venezuelan media outlets such as El Universal and El National, it is endlessly frustrating to read US media reports parroting our State Department's propaganda that there is no freedom of the press in Venezuela. Anyone who cares to learn the facts need only to take a few minutes on the internet to discern the overwhelmingly anti-Chavez content of essentially all of the Venezuelan print media, freely expressed today and every day since Chavez was first elected President. This is not debatable; read it for yourself and make up your own mind (assuming you have one).

It took more than 5 years after the coup against Chavez and the media war started by RCTV against Chavez for RCTV's license to be revoked. It took days for Phil Donahue's program to be cancelled after hard questions were asked about the policies and actions of the Bush administration. How long would a tv network last in the US if it so much questions George Bush's dreadful policies or the illegal invasion of Irak or be instrumental in instigating the ousting of George Bush?
There have also been journalists in the US put in jail for openly critize George Bush and his administration. Then, think wire tappings, email tappings, and policies design to evesdrop on the American public.
What would the US goverment do if a Venezuelan military intelligence agengy stages the ousting of a democratically elected president?

Rest my case...
