Strange coincidence! In the May 13 NY Times Magazine there's an eloquent article by Israeli novelist David Grossman on the same subject -- the debasement of language and sensibility in times of war and national crisis.

Another excellent article by Petras, freshening and updating some of Orwell's observations in Politics and the English Language. Along with "democracy" -- "freedom", "liberty", "free trade" and "the free market" are empty phrases that are constantly used to justify policy and put the mind of the electorate to sleep. "National security" is another one, as is "global war on terror."

I sometimes think that even worse than all the lives lost and money wasted, the dumbing down and brutalizing affects of the war on the American pysche are its saddest consequences.

This article is a call for deeper thought and more honesty on the part of all concerned with human progress.

With what I think is my understanding of this commentary...I would say it is excellent and extremely important...to look at how and what we communicate and especially, in my opinion, a way of communicating that can create a fellow feeling and remove the indivisible barriers of fear, distrust, skepticism...to enable awareness of common problems and be more expedient at resolving problems. Thank You James
