I lived in Italy at Lago di Fimon for three years while my wife was an engineer at Camp Ederle. The troop presence that was there until 2000 did not include the 173rd ABCT. No one who worked on the base seemed to mind that presence, but with the coming of the 173rd, there was also an intent to increase the base infrastructure and to downgrade the military presence in German lbefore bush and company were in power. The natural movement of all of the elements of the 173rd was inevitable and did not occur overnight. There were secret negoiations between Italy and the US, and you can believe that those continue with Silvio back in office. now.
There is no need for a troop presence of 5000 unless they are the spearhead for the later wars of empire that bush has started in the md-east and that Israel wants to continue with Iran. The present two contenders for the American throne in Washington, will do little or nothing to change the course of action. McCain will follow bush.
Obama is a smooth talker who has yet to anwer basic questions.

The people of Italy and Vicenza must keep on the course of peaceful dissent and civil disobdience when necessary just as should have the American public over the evergoing wars in Iraq and Afganistan.
The demise of the 10 year debacle in Vietnam came about through massive public dissent in the U.S. This is the only way that you will see your goals reached in Vicenza. bush has no intent on backing down, and neither does Silvio, and whoever takes power in the US will play the same game.

Stephanie, this is a great article! Good luck to you and the people of Vicenza!!!

And to "Ariadna" who posted "Bomb, bomb, bomb Italy"... You have got to be kidding!!!!!!!!!!!!! If that was supposed to be a joke, it was not very funny. And if you are serious, then I hope you get the mental help you need. How could anybody want to bomb people because they are standing up for peace & justice?

This brazenness of the Italian women must not stand. Yesterday Peru, today Italy. At this rate we will not be able to set up military bases wherever we wish. A lesson is needed. As senator McCain would say (and might have done so for all I know): Bomb, bomb, bomb Italy!
